Octopus Cora

November 26th 2020. Today is Thanksgiving. A quite peculiar Thanksgiving this year since it’s just myself, my husband and Cora. Usually my house is full of people and I’m ready to entertain. This is the first Thanksgiving in 9 years where it will just be the 3 of us. Truthfully, and we all agreed, this doesn’t feel like Thanksgiving, but an ordinary day where I happen to cook enough food to feed an army.

Cora is happy per usual, and because it is Thanksgiving, she is extra happy. Not because of all of the awesome food she will eat, but because of the extra TV time she will get while I get everything ready. We ate early, around one, and then brought a few plates of food to Gramma. Once we were home Cora took a short nap...too short.

After her nap, we all enjoy some much needed family time. Cora loves her tent that is housed in a corner of the  living room, a little pink tent that one of our neighbors gave her for her birthday. Cora forcibly, but in a sweet way, gets Brett and I to squeeze inside the child sized tent made for a single toddler. First, she grabs our hands and adorably pats the tent floor saying “sit.” How could we resist?? Before she can climb into the tent, she of course has to gather various items which include, Ellie (a elephant security blanket), Bear, Moo, and finally her blanket. So, here we are, the 3 of us and a collection of stuffed animals and a blanket, crammed into a child sized tent. Brett and I looking at each other, knowing this is undoubtedly going to be a dangerous adventure, but a much appreciated and loved experience, full of smiles and laughs and quite possible a few black eyes.

Cora, with a massive smile on her face begins to crawl around using us as her personal jungle gym. Maybe she is training for a karate match as we feel a tiny foot jam into our throat, a sudden hand slap to the face, and a knee to the big fin. I think in that moment she transformed into the cutest octopus I have ever seen. We FaceTimed with Gramma, which was nice for a second, while our child’s sprawling tentacles momentarily retracted. She was distracted by the phone, and Brett and I were able to take a breath. However, ADD sets in and the jungle gym is once again open for business. I looked at Brett and wished him luck as I slowly escaped the sea with octopus Cora. I felt slightly bad watching Brett be mauled by our tiny spawn, but honestly, I was loving every second of it.

I went to get us all a delicious slice of homemade pumpkin pie that Cora helped me make the night before. We sat and ate pie, and it was a moment of bliss following a memory that will indeed stick with us forever. Bath time ensues and our octopus has returned back to her normal self, an angel baby who just wants to brush her teeth while sitting on the toilet “pooping.”

All clean and ready for bed, we begin the bedtime routine. Cuddles with dad while mom rests her head on dad’s other shoulder. We sing Goodnight Cora and lay her down. Night night sweet girl, morning will come soon and we can’t wait for our next adventure.

The F Bomb?

My daughter is officially at the age where her language development is sky rocketing. The confusing gibberish that she uses regularly is beginning to transform into somewhat discernible words. Most of the words that she can say clearly are on the basic “first words,” list, like, ball, mama, dada, shoes, socks and so on. Some of the words she attempts to say are still slightly unintelligible, but we are able to understand her thanks to the bits of sign language we taught her early on.  Everyday, we are more and more impressed as our child’s vocabulary expands, adding a new word or two daily. It’s getting hard to keep up. As much as I love this stage, I know it means that she is growing much faster than I am prepared for. Brett and I both love the fact that we can hold a conversation with her now, though usually the conversation is an adorable mix of babbling and connected words. Cora is also very animated when she speaks, using hand gestures and facial expressions to get her ...

The Naked Baby Debacle

It is now mid morning and Cora is peacefully sleeping in her crib. Occasionally when she naps I like to peek in on her. We have a video monitor that allows us to check on her from our phones. I open the monitoring app and my eyes widen. Oh no, not again!!! My adorable, sweet little girl was curled up into a little ball, butt up. This would seem normal, however on this particular afternoon, my daughters butt was completely bare. Where had her diaper gone? Her pants? More importantly, how in the heck did she get them off? Fear began to mount as I could recall the last time my child was naked and in bed.  Not to long ago Cora had an ear infection. The doctor put her on antibiotics. A few days after being on the antibiotics Cora developed a nasty rash in, how shall I say...her nether regions. Poor girl was miserable. After trying different ointments and creams, we were left with no choice but to leave her naked to help dry the rash out. I kept her in the kitchen on some towels du...

How do I look?

Lately Cora has been into doing her own hair and makeup. She gleefully joins me in the bathroom as I get ready, rips through my makeup drawer and starts covering her face in eyeshadow, lipstick and anything else I might have in there. It’s adorable to watch as she tries to put the makeup on the correct places of her face, but, given the fact that she is 21 months old and not exactly using a mirror, you can only imagine how well her placement is, it’s like being blindfolded and playing pin the tail on the donkey, the makeup lands where it lands.  The other day Gramma came over to watch Cora so I could go to a doctors appointment. I usually ask if she can come over an hour or so before I have to leave, so I can take some time and get ready. I head to the bathroom and start getting ready, but, of course I leave the door open because Gramma and I need to have our typical gab fest while Brett isn’t around, he’s not exactly into the girl talk 😂. So, as I’m getting ready, Cora is ...
