Last night while laying in bed, Brett and I listened as our sweet girl chattered away in her crib. He room is located directly across from ours so we can easily hear what is going on in her room. Thanks to our video monitor we are able to check on her whenever we want to. Cora is usually fairly easy to put to bed. We have a typical routine that consists of putting her jammies on and reading a story. She makes a “chchchch” sound indicating she would like to brush her teeth. As independent as she is, she always wants to brush them by herself. Brett and I know that she won’t actually brush her teeth, but, wiggle the tooth brush around in her mouth while sucking the apple flavored toothpaste off. So, we commence with Operation Brushing of the Teeth. We hold Cora down just long enough to get a few scrubs in. She squeaks and squeals and starts writhing around like a fish who is caught in a net.
After we brush her teeth, we let her have the tooth brush so she doesn’t feel like we are controlling the situation. Now it’s time for her to have her climbing session with dad. Brett has taught her how to climb up into the crib. Thankfully she hasn’t figured out how to climb out of it yet. Cora puts her little tiny feet in between the bars and stands on the mattress. Her hands firmly grip the top rail of the crib. Brett and I begin to encourage her to lift her left leg up and hook it over the bar. It’s impressive how flexible and limber children are. She is scaling the crib like Spider-Man and here I am hoping I don’t pull a muscle while doing yoga. She manages to get her leg up and hook her foot under the rail. Now she is pulling herself up making it so she is laying across the railing. The railing is about a 3-4 inch wide bar, wide enough for her to balance herself across it. She repeatedly says “pull” until she gets herself hoisted up on top. I love the self encouragement and persistence. She never gives up.
Laying across the railing, it’s time to work her way down the other side and into the crib. She isn’t as graceful going down as she is coming up. She rocks herself just enough so she can fall, bouncing onto the mattress below. She says “again” signing it at the same time. We repeat the climbing adventure a few more times. Once we hear the genuine laughter that pierces through our hearts and we see the enormous smile spread across her face, there is no way we could say no.
We finish our little climbing session and we ask Cora if she is ready for bed. She replies with a soft yes and proceeds to rest her head on her dads shoulder. We sing her a goodnight song and lay her down to bed. We know once we leave the room, Cora will pop up like a Jack in the box and play with her stuffed animals for a little while. Brett and I are now in bed and we giggle like kids ourselves as we listen to Cora chattering away. I can here her tell one of her stuffed animals to “sit.” She sounds like an army commander ordering her troops around.
She has been in her room chitchatting and playing for about an hour now. We look in on her and she has pulled all of her stuffed animals into her crib and she is also trying to pull her massive tent into the bed with her. I decide to go in and get her re-situated. Seemingly settled, I leave the room. It has been quiet for about 10 minutes so we decide to check on her. We pull up the video on the monitor and we start laughing hysterically. Cora has managed to remove the camera off of the wall and is looking directly into their. I think she is trying to figure out how to put it back on the wall. The image on our screen begins to move around like a boomerang. Black and white shadows moving back and forth and occasionally Coras face popping up on the screen. Although it is hilarious, the image is slightly creepy. The lack of color on the monitor adds to the eeriness and it reminds of “The Blare Witch Project.” That was enough motivation for us to rectify the situation.
Brett enters the room, Cora is standing up holding the camera in her hand. She says “what is that?” about 20 times. It’s mildly amusing how many times Brett told her it’s a camera as Cora continued to ask the same question over and over again. The camera is back on the wall and Cora is finally laying down. She adjusts her animals a few more times before officially falling asleep. Brett and I have another laugh and once again we are in awe of our little girl.
