| Cora playing in the water fountain! |
Over the summer a friend of ours invited us to a little get together. It was a small gathering of family and a few friends. We couldn’t wait to get out for a little while. I knew Cora would love to be able to run around and play outside. We get there and the party has already started, we get our drinks and sit down and eat the most amazing food I have ever tasted. Jack’s mom is a phenomenal cook and sure enough, I was quick to ask for recipes after the party was over. Jack was kind enough to translate each recipe for me since they were all given in Polish.
It’s been such a fun, relaxing evening so far. It’s nice to just let loose a little bit. Brett, Jack, Jack’s brother and myself decide to play a little corn hole. Cora was having a blast running around playing with the toys Jacks mom brought out. Jacks dad made a rock garden in the backyard. Just on the outer edge was a water fountain. To no surprise my daughter was thrilled that she could play in the running water. I was just hoping she didn’t break anything. So, with her playing within a few feet of us, we decide to get the game going.
The game has been going on for what seems like a lifetime. Truthfully, none of us are really any good but it was fun nonetheless. I enjoyed the witty banter we shared back and forth. Anything to try and throw off each others game. Every so often I would peek over at Cora and make sure she isn’t eating rocks or breaking out Godzilla Cora and trying to terrorize the garden. I look over, she is giggling and smiling as she plays in the water. After a short while she loses interest in the water and starts to become curious about the rest of her surroundings. She notices another garden. A vegetable garden near the driveway. Thankfully, Jacks dad and uncle are willing to keep an eye on her so we can continue our game.
I’m honestly shocked at how comfortable Cora is without Brett and I but, I am happy she is so we could relax for a little while. I love watching her face beam with curiosity. She takes an interest in the tomatoes and it’s not long before she reaches her grubby little hands out and snaps a tomato from its vine. Of course she is running around taking bites out of it and trying to share it with everyone. I’m glad she likes them and Jacks dad didn’t seem to mind so, I sent her back over to the garden. Jacks dad and his uncle are enjoying the interaction with Cora just as much as she is with them.
Suddenly, I hear roaring laughter spread throughout the back yard. Distracted by the game, I didn’t really pay any mind to it, we were at a party after all. Next thing I know, I see my little girl running up to me. She is giving me a thumbs up, only, there is something off about it. My whacky little girl had her thumb stuck inside of a tomato. She looks so proud of her hands newest addition. I expected her to start eating it like you would eat a corn dog but, she just held her up her thumb showing of her prized possession. At one point the tomato even fell off of her thumb. She just picked it back up and plopped it right back on.
I’m not sure where her fascination with tomatoes came from or why in the world she would want to run around with it on her thumb but, that moment was the without a doubt the highlight on my evening. Little “Cora” Horner, The Tomato Queen.
